The World of Thedas Volume 3

Problem

The Dragon Age franchise is a beloved fantasy setting first published as video games by the BioWare corporation. A team of passionate fans strove to create a free project as a love letter to the series, paying homage to official lore publications known as The World of Thedas. An expansive collaborative work, the project required a layout designer to compile the vast contributor works into a cohesive digital book.

Solution

Key volunteers formed the moderator team, each with a task to oversee a specific aspect of project production. As a longtime fan of Dragon Age with a niche skillset, I provided my abilities as the formatting moderator. This meant I led the design and compliation of the final digital product, a PDF book nearly 200 pages long that combined the works over over 75 writers and illustrators. Coordinating with the other moderators, I ensured the final product was not only aestheticly pleasuing, but showcased the works of every contributor and played visual homage to the original World of Thedas books while still maintaining a unique design.

Execution

Throughout the project, I coordinated with the writing, art, and graphics mods to ensure conhesion of the project's visual assets, create standard templates for final art deliverables, and word count guidelines for writers. Additionally, I defined deadlines, file spec requirements, and submission guides with the other project moderators to ensure an effecient and coordinated management of a large creative team.

I created and oversaw the submission of final art materials to ensure consistent organization of image files and to streamline final layout processes. Once final deliverables were submitted, I designed the final book layout art, pages, and index for the project as a solo design team over the span of a month. I ensured the original editable book copy could be easily adapted for a home print version as well as a web-friendly, fast digital download version as the primary product. I also created a separate screen-reader copy that focused on compatibility with accessibility materials for use by visually impaired audiences.
